Kigali, Rwanda, 21st October 2024 – Today, the African School of Governance Foundation (ASGF) announced the establishment of the African School of Governance (ASG) graduate institution designed to offer world-class public policy education, research, and engagement programs. Prominent African leaders have come together in this landmark step, as the initiative is set to transform the continent’s leadership landscape by meeting the diverse needs of leaders across Africa.



The ASG aims to address the continent&#8217;s pressing governance challenges by equipping emerging leaders with the mindsets, skills and knowledge required for effective leadership in Africa&#8217;s future. The initiative brings together visionaries committed to creating a sustainable governance model rooted in African realities.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-collective-leadership-vision">A Collective Leadership Vision</h2>



The ASG initiative is founded by H.E. Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn, former Prime Minister of Ethiopia (both co-founders of the ASG Foundation) in consultation with other African leaders, academicians, and philanthropists dedicated to improving governance across the continent.



ASG is supported by the Mastercard Foundation as part of its Young Africa Works strategy, which aims to enable 30 million young Africans, 70 percent of whom are women, to access dignified and fulfilling work opportunities by 2030.



ASG will be led by esteemed independent governing board members, chaired by Makhtar Diop, Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and former Minister of Finance and Economy of Senegal, and including Donald Kaberuka, former President of the African Development Bank, Hajer Gueldich, Professor at the University of Carthage, Kishore Mahbubani, former Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, and Francis Gatare, CEO of the Rwanda Development Board.



The ASG Foundation has appointed Professor Kingsley Moghalu, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and a distinguished scholar and academic, to be the inaugural President of ASG. The collective vision of ASG’s leadership is to create an institution that offers world-class education in governance and public policy while promoting home-grown solutions to Africa’s unique challenges and opportunities.



Speaking on the launch, H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn commented: “The time is ripe for an institution rooted in Africa’s needs and aspirations. The African School of Governance will be a hub for nurturing purpose-driven leaders equipped to tackle the continent’s greatest challenges and opportunities, combining Africa’s uniqueness with international best practices. This is not just an educational institution, but a movement towards sustainable African leadership.”

ASG aims to meet this critical need, by developing current and future leaders who can address these challenges through a shift in leadership mindsets, governance, and sustainable development to drive long-term, meaningful change across the continent.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-academic-excellence-and-tailored-programs">Academic Excellence and Tailored Programs</h2>



ASG will offer a comprehensive suite of academic programs designed to meet governance, leadership, and policy deficit across Africa. These include the Master of Public Administration (MPA) and the Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA) programs, which are tailored to mid-career professionals and senior executives, respectively. ASG will also provide specialized Executive Courses aimed at enhancing specific leadership skills for professionals. Additionally, the Young Leaders Program (YLP) and Senior Leadership Fellowship (SLF) will cater for high-potential undergraduates and seasoned professionals nearing the end of their careers, ensuring that ASG supports leadership development at every stage.



ASG’s curriculum will be distinguished by integrating African historical, political, and socio-economic contexts. By grounding students in African realities, the institution will equip diverse leaders to navigate the continent’s complex governance challenges while drawing from global best practices.

In addition to its educational offerings, ASG will play a critical role in advancing governance through its dedicated research centres. These include the Centre for Home-Grown Innovations in Policy and Governance, the Centre for African History and Leadership, the Centre for Trade and Regional Integration, and the Centre for Technology and Effective Delivery. These research hubs will focus on generating evidence-based solutions tailored to African governance challenges, helping policymakers design and implement effective policies and strategies.



ASG’s commitment to policy engagement is equally robust, with plans to actively engage with governments, civil society, and private-sector stakeholders. Through policy labs, incubators, and collaborative partnerships, ASG will translate its research into actionable policy solutions that promote good governance and sustainable development across the continent.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-leadership-and-governance-structure">Leadership and Governance Structure</h2>



As the inaugural President of ASG, Professor Kingsley Moghalu, a globally recognised leader in public policy and governance, will steer the institution towards its ambitious goals.



Professor Moghalu, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has held senior positions in the United Nations system for 17 years and taught at prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Oxford, and The Fletcher School at Tufts University. He is also the author of several books, including the critically acclaimed Emerging Africa: How the Global Economy’s ‘Last Frontier’ Can Prosper and Matter.



Makhtar Diop, Managing Director of the IFC and Chair of ASG’s Board, said: “We are excited to welcome Kingsley Moghalu as President of the African School of Governance. Professor Moghalu will be responsible for steering and shaping ASG’s academic vision, delivering learning programs that reflect the complex governance challenges facing Africa today. Under the guidance of the Governing Board, he will focus on recruiting top-tier African faculty, fostering academic excellence, and positioning ASG as a hub for intellectual and policy innovation.

Johannesburg, South Africa, 17 October 2024&nbsp;– Tanzania is now ranked 4th highest in terms of overall attractiveness for trade in Africa. Its leap in the rankings was boosted by the country’s substantial investments in infrastructure and better access to finance, enabling businesses to engage more actively in cross-border trade.



On the downside, Ghana experienced a sharp decline, moving from the 3rd position to the 7th spot, underscoring the pressures that economy continues to endure. Its sharp decline also raises concerns about its ability to maintain trade competitiveness, even as Ghana is one of the most stable and democratic countries in West Africa. Its decline in the trade rankings is mainly due to a worsening macroeconomic environment and falling trade confidence. As economic volatility intensified in Ghana, its ability to facilitate seamless trade came under strain, making it harder for businesses to access foreign currency, most notably USD, that is required to pay for imports and thus engage in cross-border activities especially for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, which this barometer favours.



These are some of the key insights stemming from Issue 4 of the Standard Bank Africa Trade Barometer (SB ATB), launched today (<a href="https://cms.cnbcafrica.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/SBG-Africa-Trade-Barometer-2024_Consolidated-Report_Final_Published-161024-1.pdf">SBG Africa Trade Barometer 2024_Consolidated Report_Final_Published 161024</a>).



“As Africa moves towards greater integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the Standard Bank Africa Trade Barometer offers critical insights into the opportunities and challenges faced by African businesses and stakeholders in facilitating trade. The shifts detailed in the report further reflect changing macroeconomic conditions, infrastructure challenges and access to finance amongst many others, which are all impacting the trade environments of the 10 countries featured”, says Philip Myburgh, Group Head of Trade at Standard Bank Business and Commercial Banking.



The SB ATB covers seven broad thematic categories of data that impact on Africa’s trade, and upon which the barometer scores each country. These categories are; trade openness, access to finance, macroeconomic stability, infrastructure, foreign trade, governance &amp; economy, as well as traders’ financial behaviour. The SB ATB serves as Africa’s leading trade index, with the intent of addressing the information vacuum of reliable African trade data that can support and enable the growth of intra-Africa trade.



Overall, the SB ATB trade attractiveness rankings reveal a dynamic shift in trade standings among the 10 African nations it covers, with Tanzania (moving from 8th to 4th ranking), Mozambique (4 to 3), Nigeria (6 to 5) and Zambia (9 to 8) recording improvements in their positions, while declines were recorded for Ghana (3 to 7), Uganda (7 to 9) and Kenya (5 to 6). Meanwhile South Africa, Namibia and Angola retained their rankings, at positions 1, 2 and 10, respectively.



The 10 countries covered by the SB ATB are AfCFTA signatory nations, represent 66% of Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP) and 45% of the continent’s population.



Overall, the macroeconomic conditions across the countries present a mixed outlook, with relatively sustained growth tempered by ongoing challenges. The estimated real GDP growth rate for 2025 stands at 4.3%, reflecting steady progress despite headwinds. Positive developments include infrastructure investments, economic diversification efforts, and increased production in sectors like oil, mining, and agriculture. However, high inflation, forecasted to reach 9.9% in 2024, remains a pressing concern, driven by currency depreciation and worsened by weather events such as severe droughts in Southern Africa and flooding in East Africa.



Amid these complex dynamics, it is evident that the path forward will require a focus on prudent economic management, diversified growth strategies, and bolstering resilience against climate risks.

ATFX, a globally-regulated and award-winning fintech broker, has set its sights on Africa.



To expand its operations on the continent, ATFX acquired Khwezi Financial Services (FS), a South African forex and CFDs broker based in Cape Town. With an established clientele and a commitment to customer service, Khwezi FS was one of the first non-bank, financial services provider in the country to be licensed as an over-the-counter derivatives provider (ODP).



Now operating as ATFX Africa, the local brokerage forms part of ATFX’s global business led by Linton White, ATFX’s new regional head, and Monty Barnard, ATFX Africa’s COO.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-local-expertise-global-knowledge">Local expertise, global knowledge</h2>



“We’re driving ATFX in South Africa. We have a big task ahead of us but we’re very excited,” says White.



ATFX started in 2017 and currently has 23 locations around the world in countries such Australia, the U.K., Cyprus, Malaysia, Jordan and Dubai. It has also been ranked the fourth largest broker of its kind in terms of the total volume of contracts for difference (CFDs) and derivatives traded on the MetaTrader 5 trading platform.



“We’ve got good coverage on most of the continents and a key eye on expansion,” says White.



Tasked with establishing ATFX’s footprint in South Africa and with a goal of moving further up the continent by 2025, White explains that ATFX was particular about what they were after when making the South African acquisition. Being fully-licensed was the first step, but ATFX also required local knowledge and expertise from the people who were part of those companies.



“That’s what sets ATFX apart from a lot of the other global brokers,” says White, adding, “They’ve focused on maintaining the local presence, knowledge and expertise instead of bringing in an international template and applying that to a local business.”



White believes that the autonomy ATFX has given to their Africa-based team will be paramount to the success of the business.



“It’s not a straightforward process. When you’re a key part of South Africa’s financial infrastructure, you need the regulator’s approval on anything that you do,” says Barnard. “That said, it was and still is a very exciting process. The team is growing and we’re expanding quickly.”



Unlike other acquisitions where a business is bought out and the staff let go, the entire Khwezi team moved across to ATFX, which was an important part of the deal.



“We’ve simply built on from the great team that we originally had,” says Barnard, who also shares that one of the highlights of being a part of ATFX was the annual dinner in Vietnam earlier in the year.&nbsp;



With over 700 employees worldwide, seeing the global team together was not only an unforgettable experience but a reminder of what makes ATFX different from its competitors.



“There’s a lot of copy-and-paste-style businesses and brokers in our space and they all tend to focus on what the competition is doing in order to present themselves as a competitor,” says White.



“But ATFX is a completely different business and we’re approaching the industry with a unique perspective because we don’t just want to be seen as another competitor.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-perfect-match">The perfect match</h2>



From ATFX’s client-centric approach to maintaining the highest standards of regulatory compliance, White likens their customer service to what you would receive from a personal banker – professional, personalized and respectful.



“… [to] not immediately go for the jugular and get deposits and force transactions, it’s more about taking care of the clients and making sure that their needs are met rather than trying to force them to meet ours,” says White.



“It’s one of the reasons the two brands, Khwezi and ATFX, came together. The focus is the client. It’s all about treating them fairly,” adds Barnard. “This industry can be cutthroat and sometimes the consumer comes second. We want to change that; we want people to trust us while we accommodate all of their requests quickly.”



Being one of the first non-bank financial services providers in South Africa with an ODP license, ATFX could also be assured that Khwezi FS aligned with the global standards of regulatory compliance and security that the company upholds.



Acting as an agent of one of the five major banks in South Africa, ATFX Africa is allowed to open segregated bank accounts for clients which means, from an administrative point of view, the funds are kept completely separate from the fintech broker’s day-to-day accounts.



“Investors want to know that their money is going to be safe and this gives our clients an extra layer of security,” says Barnard.



“We also work quite closely with the banks, sharing FICA processes and they conduct annual checks to make sure we’re doing things the right way.”



As for the services ATFX offers, they provide a comprehensive range of financial services in Africa such as trading in currencies and commodities like gold and oil, and indices like the S&amp;P 500, Dow Jones and NASDAQ. In South Africa, ATFX uses MetaTrader 5 which is one of the most popular trading platforms among brokers worldwide.



“The ODP license is fairly new as there are only 11 of these licenses locally which have been awarded to non-banks. These licenses determine what we can sell and are determined on aspects like capital adequacy and manpower,” adds Barnard.



“But with the ATFX acquisition, there are big plans for Q3 and Q4 of this year regarding what we can add to those products such as shares or crypto. The sky’s the limit.”



Being the fourth largest brokerage, globally, comes with other benefits like a big liquidity pool which means competitive trading fees – an advantage in a high-risk trading environment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-giving-back-moving-forward">Giving back, moving forward</h2>



Handling billions of dollars in transactions every day, it’s easy to assume that ATFX would be purely focused on maximizing revenue but the fintech broker’s extensive educational resources demonstrate its commitment to prioritizing clients&#8217; needs and long-term success over short-term profits.



“In Africa, there is major opportunity for a broker who is legitimate, trustworthy and focused on educating those who need access to these kinds of resources,” says White, who adds that they’re also in talks with some of the larger institutions across South Africa about scholarships and internships going into 2025.

“It&#8217;s not just about making money for the business, but it&#8217;s about how you provide and give back to the community,” says White. “Personally, and professionally, you need to treat everyone with the same level of respect.”



For both White and Barnard, this is only the beginning. With all the noise around regulations, they believe that ATFX is the broker that everyone has been waiting for.

Kigali, Rwanda –&nbsp;The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) today hosted a press conference at the Kigali Convention Centre to announce details of the 20th edition of the Kwita Izina Gorilla Naming Ceremony, scheduled for 18 October 2024 at the foothills of Volcanoes National Park in Kinigi, Musanze District.

“It is a great pleasure to welcome you to this press conference as we prepare for one of the most significant events on Rwanda’s conservation and tourism calendar—Kwita Izina. Through this annual event, we celebrate our successful conservation efforts and acknowledge the incredible contributions made by local communities, conservation professionals, and partners from around the globe.”



The Kwita Izina ceremony, which has named 395 baby mountain gorillas since its inception, is part of Rwanda’s broader effort to protect the country’s wildlife and natural ecosystems. These efforts, alongside sustainable ecotourism, have helped Rwanda achieve remarkable growth in its tourism sector, which generated over USD 620 million in revenue from 1.4 million visitors in 2023. Gorilla tourism alone contributes 1% of Rwanda’s GDP and is a key driver of local community development.



Through the Tourism Revenue Sharing Program, 10% of all national park revenues are reinvested in socio-economic projects that benefit communities living near protected areas.



Since 2005, Rwf 12.86 billion has been used to fund 1,108 community projects, including schools, health centres, and dairy farms. These initiatives have empowered communities to become guardians of conservation, protecting both the wildlife and the environment surrounding national parks such as Volcanoes, Akagera, Gishwati-Mukura, and Nyungwe.



“This year’s Kwita Izina marks a significant milestone as we celebrate 20 years of this flagship event,” Ms. Rugwizangoga added.



“We will be naming 22 baby gorillas, and we are excited to welcome past and new Namers from around the world, whose names will be revealed in the coming days.”



In addition to the traditional naming ceremony, pop-up events will be organised in collaboration with the private sector, bringing celebrations to communities across the country. These events aim to make the Kwita Izina festivities accessible to more Rwandans and visitors while further promoting conservation awareness.



Other events include the Business of Conservation Conference (14-16 October), the Kwita Izina Golf Tournament (19 October), and the Kwita Izina Gala Dinner, featuring performances from local and international artists.

Custodial and securities services in Nigeria have been evolving gradually for some time now. What would you say is the state of the market at this time?



Nigeria&#8217;s capital market is progressing, with custodial organisations transforming from passive players to proactive account administrators and capital enablers. As the market deepens, custodians are becoming vital in capital market development, supporting the increasing volume and activity, and meeting evolving business and client needs.



An essential development is the formation of associations like the Association of Asset Custodians of Nigeria (AACN), which amplifies the value custodians offer. Stanbic IBTC Nominees is a key member of this association, actively participating in conferences and discussions that promote industry growth.



It is interesting how you mention that custodian organisations are now regarded as initiators of capital market development rather than recipients. Can you shed more light on this?



Traditionally, custodians safeguarded financial assets, minimising risks. Today, their role has expanded to include account administration, transaction settlements, and tax support. More importantly, custodians now lead advocacy efforts by engaging regulators and market participants to initiate market changes, leveraging their expertise to enhance local market capabilities.



By working closely with regulators and market participants, custodians have driven initiatives like securities lending to improve market liquidity. This collaborative effort has led to the introduction and regulation of securities lending in Nigeria, contributing significantly to market development.



In 2015, Stanbic IBTC Bank introduced securities lending in Nigeria. How would you describe the process and journey that led to this feat?



SEC issued licenses for Securities Lending Agents in 2012, and by 2015, securities lending was officially launched. Since then, Stanbic IBTC has been the most active participant. We have increased market awareness and engagement, collaborating with key market participants to drive adoption.



Now, we are excited to include fixed income securities like Federal Government Bonds and Treasury Bills in our lending services. This expansion provides more opportunities for our clients and enhances market liquidity.&nbsp;



What exactly does securities lending entail?



Securities lending involves the temporary transfer of securities from a lender to a borrower, with an agreement to return the securities either on demand or at a specified future date. The borrower gains full legal title and can sell the securities, often for short selling.



Transactions are governed by formal agreements detailing the loan terms, fees, and collateral. During the lending period, the borrower is obligated to return the securities upon request at the expiration of the agreement.



How does securities lending contribute to the overall capital markets’ efficiency and liquidity?&nbsp;



Securities lending is crucial for effective market-making, increasing overall market liquidity, and enhancing the efficiency of price discovery mechanisms. It allows market-makers and investors to take and cover short positions, supporting their market-making activities, investment strategies, or hedging purposes. By enabling these activities, securities lending fosters a more dynamic and liquid market, which benefits all participants.



Can you elaborate on this recent development in the securities lending service in Stanbic IBTC Bank?



Previously, our securities lending services were limited to equities. Now, we are excited to extend this service to include fixed income securities such as Federal Government Bonds and treasury bills. This expansion allows us to offer more comprehensive solutions to our local and international institutional clients; providing greater opportunities for income generation and liquidity creation in the market. We have also opened this offering up to international investors. In 2024 alone, we successfully loaned out assets worth 150 million Naira, underscoring the growing demand and trust in our securities lending services.



What are the implications of increased securities lending for market participants and regulators?



Increased securities lending boosts market activity and liquidity, benefiting both buy-side and sell-side participants. It paves the way for new products like derivatives and attracts more investors. Can you highlight the involvement of The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) and The Financial Market Dealers Quotation (FMDQ) in securities lending?



The NGX and FMDQ play crucial roles in facilitating and regulating the securities market. The NGX provides guidelines for securities lending transactions and ensures adherence to best practices. FMDQ, particularly in the fixed income market, supports the inclusion of bonds and treasury bills, enhancing market liquidity.



Are securities lending transactions permitted in asset classes other than equities, such as government bonds and ETFs?



Yes, securities lending is permitted for all listed securities, including equities, government bonds, and treasury bills. As the market develops, we aim to include more diverse and liquid assets in the securities lending pool.



How much of Standard Bank’s expertise was leveraged in establishing securities lending in Nigeria?



Standard Bank, as a leading custodial bank in Africa, provided invaluable technical guidance, training, and platforms for securities lending. Their support was instrumental in launching and operationalising securities lending in Nigeria, enhancing our market&#8217;s functionality and appeal.

McDonald’s South Africa recognises that a change as little as reading a book can change a lot about a child’s future.



Starting in the month of September, which marks Literacy Month, McDonald’s South Africa will be on a quest to donate over a million books to disadvantaged schools and Early Childhood Development Centres across the country.



According to the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study, which evaluated the reading ability of 400,000 students globally in 2021, South Africa ranked last out of 57 countries assessed, with eight out of 10 South African school children struggling to read by the age of ten. The study showed that 81% of South African children could not read for comprehension in any of the country&#8217;s eleven official languages.

Think of a family business – the image that probably comes to mind is the ‘mom and pop’ corner store with kids carrying stock and doing counter duty. The reality, however, is different. The African multigenerational business of today is likely to employ hundreds of people, and ultimately may find itself moving towards being listed on one of the stock exchanges.



Multigenerational, family-owned businesses are estimated to contribute between 20% and 30% of South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP). In fact, 60% of JSE-listed entities were either founded by or are still managed by families. Perhaps most notably, family businesses comprise about 70% of all South African companies and employ approximately 60% of the workforce.



These impressive statistics and success stories are not just about entrepreneurs who have identified opportunities but also about their strategic vision, hard work and the transformation of fledgling enterprises into powerhouses. Family-owned businesses, which span all market sectors, including agriculture, agri-processing, manufacturing and logistics, also share other characteristics that contribute to their success.



They tend to grow market share by investing locally at first and have consistently grown above inflation and the national average GDP growth rate. Their focus most often is on building sustainable businesses that are the mainstay of a family legacy. These entities demonstrated impressive resilience during COVID and have managed sustained growth over a long period of relative weakness in the overall SA economy. The Isondo facility is set to be fully operational by late 2024, providing a basis for the OR Tambo SEZ to contribute to South Africa’s objectives to manufacture and export key components with an input into the green hydrogen landscape.



Without a doubt, the realization of Isondo’s imminent plant operationalisation is a major step in positioning South Africa as a leader in the global green hydrogen value chain. It also has significant economic benefits, including creating up to 300 skilled jobs.

The potential for mobile money and digital payments to drive financial inclusion is immense. We can see this potential being unlocked on the African continent as it accounts for <a href="https://african.business/2023/05/technology-information/west-africa-worlds-largest-growing-mobile-money-market-in-2022-says-gsma-report#:~:text=Despite%20this%20growth%2C%20East%20Africa,registered%20accounts%20in%20West%20Africa.">70%</a> of the world’s $1 trillion mobile money value and registered a <a href="https://www.gsma.com/sotir/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/GSMA-SOTIR-2024_Report.pdf">12%</a> growth in mobile money accounts to 1.75 billion in 2023.



This is opening a number of new opportunities for economic growth and development as more robust and connected payment networks are breaking down geographical barriers, opening up access to new markets and enabling anyone to send and receive payments quickly and easily from and to anywhere in the world.



However, these significant benefits are largely being realized and felt in Africa’s larger, and key, markets such as Nigeria, South Africa, and of course Kenya- where mobile money was first launched and popularized on the continent. While these markets have reached greater levels of digital payments maturity, smaller and more underdeveloped markets are often passed over, leaving many still excluded from economic participation and financial freedom.



And yet, the truly transformative power of mobile money and digital payments can be most realized in these overlooked economies where the reliance on cash, a lack of traditional bank accounts due to limited infrastructure and access, and the substantial penetration of smartphones and increasing internet connectivity have created the ideal confluence of circumstances that will pave the way for a more inclusive and resilient financial future.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-realizing-the-enabling-power-of-digital-payments">Realizing the enabling power of digital payments</h2>



The biggest drivers of mobile money adoption in Africa are its accessibility and ease of use. Unlike traditional financial services, there’s no need for extensive paperwork, a credit and financial history, or a physical presence within a brick-and-mortar branch to gain access to these services.



This low barrier to entry, along with mobile money’s ability to enable economies beyond just transactions and empower both individuals and enterprises, makes it particularly impactful for underserved markets. Within these regions, mobile money and the digital payments ecosystem have the power to serve as catalysts for economic growth, poverty reduction, and enable marginalized communities with the financial freedom to manage their day-to-day lives, start or expand their businesses, and invest in their futures.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-concerted-effort-towards-a-single-goal">A concerted effort towards a single goal</h2>



It’s important that all levels of an economy work towards achieving the crucial objective of financial inclusion. Collaboration is a key component in creating and maintaining an environment that creates more opportunities for inclusive growth and ensures economic resilience.



Not only do governments play a pivotal role in developing and implementing the policies and regulations that foster a supportive framework for financial services, but investment from both the public and private sectors is essential to building the necessary digital payments infrastructure that will underpin financial inclusion on the continent. Meanwhile, fintech firms can continue to drive innovation in this space that will achieve the desired convenience, speed and accessibility within the payments space.



We can see this value already starting to be realized across smaller markets like Eswatini where the <a href="https://www.afi-global.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Eswatini-Fintech-Landscape-Report.pdf">Central Bank established a FinTech unit</a> to spearhead the development of digital payments in the country in 2018; in South Sudan where the <a href="https://www.gsma.com/solutions-and-impact/connectivity-for-good/mobile-for-development/blog/south-sudan-mobile-moneys-role-in-the-road-to-recovery/">introduction of mobile money in 2017</a> has enabled development organizations to distribute cash assistance securely; and Somalia which <a href="https://qz.com/africa/2152271/somalia-changed-the-face-of-money-transfers-worldwide#:~:text=Somalia's%20central%20bank%20awarded%20Hormuud,for%20people%20across%20the%20country">recently enabled digital payments</a> to be made between the country’s banks, making payments easier.



<a></a>In Ethiopia, non-banks were enabled to provide mobile money services in 2020 as mobile money services could lift 700 000 people out of poverty, add $5.3 billion to the country’s economy, increase tax revenue by $300 million, and essentially position the country to adapt to economic downturns according to the <a href="https://www.gsma.com/solutions-and-impact/connectivity-for-good/mobile-for-development/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/GSMA_Mobile-money-in-Ethiopia-Advancing-financial-inclusion-and-driving-growth-report.pdf">GSMA’s 2023 Mobile Money in Ethiopia report</a>. Recognising this period as a key moment in the country’s transformation into a financially inclusive economic powerhouse, Onafriq, Africa’s largest payments gateway, also strengthened its presence in Ethiopia through a number of partnerships with financial institutions, mobile network operators, and other key decision makers. This includes partnerships with Ethio telecom and M-PESA Safaricom to enhance and streamline remittance flows and address the shortage of forex while providing customers with much-needed funds.



It’s clear then that when all these elements work in harmony, they can break down barriers to financial access, enabling people and businesses to participate more fully in the economy, thus driving sustainable development and economic growth in these underserved regions. Investing in these smaller, underserved markets &#8211; which represent a significant portion of the continent’s population &#8211; is simply integral to realizing true financial inclusion across Africa.



When everyone can access financial services, we can foster inclusive growth, stimulate local economies, and open up access to new markets and opportunities, connecting the continent through sustainable economic development.

True financial inclusion calls for smaller markets to receive equal attention to larger ones

Across the world, the business community watched the SA elections with great concern as to how the outcome will affect sentiments and the ability to do business in South Africa. The known structural, economic, policy certainty and governance challenges created a challenging operating environment for business and therefore the seventh elections of our democracy provided a good opportunity to reset. The lack of an outright majority winner has itself presented some unknowns for all observers and the entire nation.



The dawn of the Government of National Unity (GNU) in South Africa has ignited a renewed sense of optimism among businesses, particularly global investors. This shift presents a unique opportunity for a more collaborative approach to economic development. One critical area ripe for innovation and growth is the field of digital payments, which holds the potential to revolutionise the informal sector and empower young entrepreneurs, thereby boosting economic growth and creating new jobs.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-call-for-inclusive-financial-services">A call for inclusive financial services</h2>



The GNU&#8217;s openness to new collaborations marks a significant change from the previous single-party administrations. This new approach aligns with the shared objectives of the country, including the development of an inclusive payments ecosystem. The South African Reserve Bank&#8217;s Digital Payment Roadmap, part of Vision 2025, and the proposed activity-based licensing under the COFI Bill are pivotal steps toward creating a conducive regulatory environment.



This for us, creates the platform for true innovation and true scale in endeavours to be financially inclusive. It opens the door for non-banks and fintechs to accelerate their initiatives into digital payments and actual services finally reaching the informal and cash-heavy segments of our market.



Our challenges with cash-handling operations and risk associated with this is a major concern for South Africa as a country and could not be a greater motivator for accelerating digital payments with aggressive acceleration.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-industry-landscape-the-role-of-digital-payments">Industry landscape: The role of digital payments</h2>



In many cash-dependent societies, the lack of digitisation leads to missed opportunities for data insights. Digital payments not only promote financial inclusion but also provide valuable data that can inform government policy, inform product innovation and drive economic growth. The expansion of payment options can significantly accelerate the adoption of digital payments.



Network International as a leading payments enabler across Middle East and Africa has seen the positive impact of in successful implementations of Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) like mobile money acceptance at Point-of-Sale, or of late, the acceptance of UPI and AANI wallets in the UAE market enabled through Network International. We have seen the staggering uptake from Indian visitors to the UAE.



Multi-tender acceptance plans are critical in ensuring that merchants can accept payments at the point of interaction with the customer without preference. There is great industry excitement in the next launch of Request-to-Pay (RTP) for PayShap which also introduces new customer payment methods for example Person-to-Merchant (P2M).

Africa is the world’s second most populated continent, accounting for just under 18% of the global population.&nbsp; Despite this, the continent is accountable for at least 25% of the world’s disease burden.



With more than its fair share of diseases, the World Economic Forum estimates that the total demand for packaged medicines in Africa is around $18 billion per year.&nbsp; Interestingly, 61% of that is serviced through imported products, with only 36% being locally produced. Of the 36%, 40% of the production capabilities are confined to packaging and labelling with the remaining 40% limited to filling and finishing (Who Owns Whom, 2023).



For Africa to effectively service the medical requirements of its 1.4 billion people, countries on the continent must acknowledge the need to enhance their pharmaceutical and medical production capabilities.&nbsp;



In recognition of this, the OR Tambo International Airport Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has designed, and is in the process of developing, a globally competitive medical manufacturing cluster that will enhance the production and export of medical products from South Africa.&nbsp;

Comprised of 265,000m² of developable space, the OR Tambo SEZ Precinct 2 development is well positioned to support the production and export of time-sensitive products such as medicines.



Located on the doorstep of OR Tambo International, the SEZ is an ideal location for the production and export of high-value, light weight products that utilize air freight as a mode of transport.



In support of its competitive value proposition, the OR Tambo SEZ completed industry-specific research that identified different elements essential for the establishment of a globally competitive medical manufacturing cluster.&nbsp; The result of this research is a bold plan that aims to secure continental as well as international buy-in, thereby ensuring that the cluster is well positioned to support the manufacturing of different elements that form part of the broader pharmaceutical and medical product value chain in Africa.

The cluster-based approach is globally acknowledged as an effective approach to enhance economic growth and development.



For it to be competitive, any cluster must pursue and ensure the existence of linkages between different elements that form part of the production process; these include basic inputs, manufacturers, role players that approve the products for consumption and those that move the goods to market. Equally important are the research, development and innovation institutions.



The OR Tambo SEZ’s planned pharma and medical manufacturing precinct will have all the above inclusive of a variety of medical production processes such as pharmaceutical mixing, medical device component manufacturing, sub-assembling, labelling and packaging, warehousing and storage, training, standard testing, patent compliance and regulatory approval institutions.&nbsp;



Through this approach, the SEZ, which already boasts of a competitive location, is destined to become a world class pharma and medical products manufacturing destination.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-available-incentives">Available Incentives</h2>



As a designated Special Economic Zone, the OR Tambo SEZ will also provide manufacturers that are looking to set up operations with the opportunity to access incentives that reduce the cost of production; this is particularly key, given that manufacturing costs remain a major impediment in the enhancement of manufacturing in Africa.



Available incentives include duty-free importation of production-related materials and assets as well as VAT exemption on exports.&nbsp;

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has consolidated its position among the leading institutions of higher learning in the world, soaring to its highest-ever position in global rankings. UJ secured a remarkable #36 position in the <a href="https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/university-johannesburg">Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings</a> released in June this year. This is quite a feat for a university, considering that this year’s rankings included 1,963 institutions, an increase of 372 from the previous year.&nbsp;The University’s standing in these global rankings marks a significant rise of 10 from its previous position of #46 in the 2023 edition.



Consistently leading as the top university in Africa and South Africa, UJ has also maintained its prestigious #1 spot on the continent and in the country. This achievement is for its exceptional contribution to poverty alleviation, securing the top position in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1: No Poverty.
