Solidarity Fund to respond to KZN floods

The Solidarity Fund, established two years ago to coordinate the national response to the Covid-19 pandemic, has been thrust into action once again. This time, the Fund has been called upon to support relief efforts in the wake of the catastrophic floods that have displaced over 40,000 people and tragically claimed nearly 450 lives in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. To address this new challenge, the Fund has established a dedicated Floods Response pillar to manage and allocate resources specifically for flood relief efforts, distinct from its original focus on Covid-19 relief. Gloria Serobe, Chairperson of the Solidarity Fund, joined CNBC Africa to discuss the Fund's response to the crisis. The Fund's board, originally in the process of winding down operations, remains fully intact and committed to serving the nation. Despite the board's impending closure at the end of September, it has reactivated to address the urgent needs arising from the floods. Serobe confirmed that all board members are available and actively engaged in the Fund's new mandate. The specifics of the financial support from the national treasury are still being finalized, with no concrete figures available as of yet. Additionally, a separate bank account has been set up to receive donations specifically for flood relief efforts, though the exact amount of contributions from private entities and individuals remains undisclosed at this time. Drawing from the Fund's experience in managing the Covid-19 crisis, Serobe emphasized the importance of maintaining speed and agility in responding to emergencies without compromising on governance processes. She highlighted the Fund's rigorous weekly board meetings and daily executive committee sessions to ensure swift but accountable decision-making. Transparency and accountability are paramount when managing public funds, especially in times of crisis, to uphold the Fund's integrity and credibility. In terms of collaboration with external partners, the Fund is leveraging its strong relationships with organizations like the Gift of the Givers and NGOs with on-the-ground implementation capabilities. Serobe underscored the Fund's reliance on external partners for their expertise, particularly in disaster response and relief efforts.
