Senegal’s Hott speaks on Africa-Caribbean trade potential

The partnership between Africa and the Caribbean holds immense potential for regional trade growth through air and sea routes, according to Senegal's Minister of Economy, Planning, and International Cooperation, Amadou Hott. Speaking at a trade and investment conference, Minister Hott emphasized the need for greater collaboration between the two regions to leverage their strengths and address trade imbalances. He highlighted the opportunities in sectors such as energy, tourism, and fisheries, where increased cooperation could benefit both sides. However, Minister Hott also acknowledged the challenges that need to be overcome, such as improving air and sea connectivity and streamlining trade policies and procedures. As the world navigates the new post-COVID reality, the Minister sees a unique opportunity for Africa and the Caribbean to work together, not only on economic issues but also on pressing global challenges like climate change and youth unemployment. The vision of an African Caribbean Union, starting with business and trade ties and growing into a broader political relationship, could pave the way for deeper integration and mutual benefit. To achieve this ambitious goal, Minister Hott outlined three critical steps: enhancing air and sea links between the regions, focusing on direct shipping routes, and targeting African consumers for the tourism sector. By taking these proactive measures, the Africa-Caribbean partnership could unlock significant economic opportunities and foster closer ties between the two regions.
