Bidvest revenue climbs 14% to R57.2bn

Industrial conglomerate Bidvest has shown impressive double-digit growth in both half-year revenue and headline earnings, largely driven by growth in key sectors such as agriculture, mining, renewable energy, and travel and tourism. Mpumi Madisa, the CEO of Bidvest, provided insights into the various segments contributing to the company's profits. In particular, the freight division witnessed a remarkable 31% increase in trading profit, attributed to the success of the bulk terminal in Richards Bay and the strong performance of the clearing and forwarding business. Madisa highlighted the rebound in this sector, fueled by new business opportunities and market share expansion within the automotive industry. Looking ahead, Bidvest remains optimistic about the sustainability of its growth trajectory, with continued expectations for growth in travel and tourism, consistent performance in bulk minerals and grain sectors, and a promising outlook in financial services and renewable energy. Madisa emphasized the significant potential in the renewable energy space, noting a five-fold increase in volumes year-on-year, driven by the growing demand for alternative energy sources amid challenges in the country's traditional energy sector. The company's robust acquisition pipeline further underscores its strategic growth initiatives. However, Madisa also raised concerns regarding talent retention in a competitive global landscape, particularly in finance and technology sectors. Additionally, she highlighted the critical issue of power supply, pointing out the impact of power disruptions on Bidvest's operations and the need for a sustainable energy mix to ensure consistent service delivery.
