Solar kit maker d.light unveils new solar home system

As the African continent continues to grapple with energy access issues, companies like d.light are stepping up to provide renewable energy solutions. With about 645 million people in Africa still lacking access to electricity, the need for both on-grid and off-grid solutions has never been greater. CNBC Africa recently spoke with Ned Tozun, the Founder and CEO of d.light, about the company's investment in off-grid renewable energy solutions, specifically their new platform-based solar home system. One of the key challenges in the past has been the upfront cost of solar systems. d.light is now targeting low-income earners with affordable products like the Solar X850, which offers features like lights, radio, and even TV. Tozun explained that the company's pay-as-you-go financing model helps make these solutions accessible to more people, allowing them to pay for the products in affordable installments. With a target of reaching 100 million people by 2020, d.light is making significant strides in closing Africa's electricity gap. Tozun expressed confidence in achieving this goal, noting the declining prices and increasing efficiency of solar technology. He believes that solar energy will play a crucial role in leapfrogging traditional grid systems in parts of Africa and Asia. In the realm of payment platforms, d.light prioritizes flexibility and accessibility. By allowing customers to pay via various mobile money providers and phone types, the company ensures that its products are available to a wide range of users. This approach has enabled d.light to expand its reach beyond Kenya into markets like Uganda and Rwanda. Tozun also addressed the challenges of establishing a level playing field for energy solutions across different African countries. While some countries have been more progressive in reducing taxes and duties on solar products, others still present obstacles. Tozun called for greater support from governments and institutions in unlocking local capital to facilitate the growth of the renewable energy sector.
