Empowering women affected by conflict

Women for Women International is a global organization dedicated to empowering women affected by conflict and war by helping them earn and save money and improve their health and well-being. Philomena Kwao, Global Ambassador of Women for Women International, recently visited internally displaced women in Joss, Nigeria, to witness firsthand the impact of the organization's programs. In a conversation with CNBC Africa, Kwao shared her experiences meeting the women who had completed the 12-month program and were graduating. Kwao described the region of Joss as beautiful, with its waterfalls, mountains, and lush greenery, yet marred by ongoing conflict. Despite the challenges, she was inspired by the resilience and strength of the women she met. The program aims to empower women through various skills and training, including numeracy, budgeting, literacy, basic healthcare, and vocational training. The women also receive a monthly stipend and learn how to budget and save. One of the key aspects of the program is the Men's Empowerment Program, which runs parallel to the women's program and focuses on teaching male relatives of the participants how to advocate for change and support women's empowerment. This holistic approach aims to strengthen families and communities by fostering gender equality and social cohesion. While the program equips women with practical skills and knowledge, Kwao highlighted the social challenges faced by internally displaced women, such as marginalization and lack of ownership. Returning to their communities after being displaced presents additional hurdles, including finding shelter, food, and education for their children. The women are essentially starting from scratch and rely on support from their families and communities to rebuild their lives. In her social media campaign, 'Queen in Me,' Kwao documents her journey of self-discovery and acceptance while showcasing the experiences of women in Nigeria. By sharing photos and videos on Instagram, Kwao aims to raise awareness and empower more women and girls around the world. Through her work with Women for Women International, Kwao serves as a voice for marginalized women and a beacon of hope for those striving to overcome the challenges of conflict and displacement. Her commitment to advocating for women's empowerment shines through in her interactions with the women of Nigeria and her dedication to amplifying their stories on a global platform.
