How renewables could help solve Africa's job crisis

Power for All has launched the 'Powering Jobs' campaign in collaboration with companies like Schneider Electric to train one million solar electric technicians and bridge the skills gap in the off-grid renewable energy value chain. While progress has been made in training technicians, there is still a long way to go to fully realize the job creation potential of off-grid renewables. One of the key challenges facing Africa is the lack of reliable data on the job opportunities in the renewable energy sector, particularly in off-grid solutions. Governments, regional institutions, and international donors need accurate data to understand the potential impact of investing in renewable energy skills and training programs. By shifting the focus of policy discussions to prioritize job creation in the renewable energy sector, Africa can unlock a vast reservoir of economic growth and opportunity. With 57% of sub-Saharan Africa's population still lacking access to electricity, off-grid and mini-grid solutions have a crucial role to play in bridging the energy gap. Private sector players are increasingly showing interest in investing in off-grid solar and mini-grids, signaling a growing market for renewable energy solutions. The potential for job creation in small and medium-sized enterprises and agriculture through renewable energy solutions is immense, highlighting the transformative impact that widespread access to electricity can have on local economies.
