Advancing Africa’s growth through industrialisation

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is taking steps to play a significant role in advancing industrialization in Africa. UNIDO Director Shenhong Yao recently shared insights on the organization's presence and contributions at the INTRA Africa Trade Fair in Cairo. The event witnessed the first-ever South-South Investment Forum, which aimed to foster partnerships and dialogue for the industrial development of the continent. Yao highlighted the enthusiasm and engagement of participants, emphasizing the importance of collaboration for a prosperous future for Africa. Key themes emerging from the discussions revolved around the concept of South-South cooperation, distinguishing it from traditional North-South engagements. The challenges and opportunities for such collaboration were also deliberated, with an emphasis on immediate actions needed to drive industrialization forward. Despite these hurdles, there is optimism for the future, with industrialization recognized as a pivotal driver for Africa's overall development. A significant shift observed at the trade fair was the growing momentum towards intra-African collaboration, particularly in infrastructure and industrialization. With the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) laying the groundwork for economic integration, countries are urged to seize the opportunity to cooperate on a larger scale. UNIDO advocates for Inclusive Sustainable Industrial Development (ISID) and stands ready to partner with African governments and international allies to bolster industrialization efforts across the continent. Another pressing issue that arose during the discussions was the need to balance industrialization with environmental sustainability. Mr. Yao acknowledged the global concern over climate change and emphasized the importance of clean energy initiatives in the industrialization process. Collaboration at both regional and international levels is deemed essential to address climate challenges while promoting industrial growth effectively. Looking ahead, UNIDO remains dedicated to measuring and evaluating the impact of industrialization in Africa. With a focus on the third decade of African industrialization (IDDA3), the organization commits to working closely with African nations and global stakeholders to drive economic progress through industrial development.
