Youth innovation at the core of Rwanda’s transformation agenda

Rwanda's transformation agenda is centered around youth innovation and empowerment. Esther Kunda, Director General of Innovation and emerging technologies at the Ministry of ICT and Innovation, highlights the entrepreneurial spirit of Rwandan youth and the innovative business models they are developing to address social problems in a financially sustainable way. With a focus on empowering young entrepreneurs, Rwanda is fostering a supportive ecosystem where startups can thrive. Despite the cutthroat nature of the startup world, Kunda emphasizes that failure is a stepping stone to success, with most entrepreneurs succeeding on their third venture. Through initiatives like the Hanga Pitch Fest, young people are not only creating jobs but also providing impactful solutions in sectors like agriculture, job creation, and renewable energy. To create an enabling environment for youth innovation, the government is collaborating with various stakeholders. Partnerships with organizations like UNDP provide year-long business support and office spaces to startups. Furthermore, platforms like the Hanga Pitch Fest serve as a gateway for young entrepreneurs to connect with corporates, private organizations, and NGOs, facilitating collaboration and growth opportunities. Addressing the gap between education and job market requirements is a key focus for the Rwandan government. By strengthening the relationship between the private sector and academia, Rwanda aims to align educational programs with the evolving skills demand in sectors like technology. Initiatives within the Ministry of Education and Ministry of ICT are working to update university curricula, promote technical skills development, and provide access to professional training programs such as data science and programming. The emphasis on digital skills inclusion underscores Rwanda's commitment to preparing its youth for the technological advancements shaping the job market.
